Today South Australia celebrates the 100th anniversary of one of their greatest innovations being invented; The Stobie Pole. On July 15th 1924, James Cyril Stobie submitted his patent for an electricity pole made out of metal and concrete. This was his ingenuous answer to the problem of white ants and termites eating the wooden electricity poles being produced at the time. The pole was named after him, and the South Australian electricity company has now erected over 650 000 of them across the state. They may cost a little more to produce than regular poles, but they last for so much longer. The oldest stobie pole in the state is estimated to be over 90 years old!
